Antique Stanley tools are often sought after for their aesthetic value. Handles were made of beautiful woods such as Brazilian rosewood, chosen for its durability, and the metal surfaces were often highly detailed. This combination means that many of the tools still around today have held up well and can be in demand. The Bob Kaune Antique Used Tools site has many types of Stanley tools, but in particular it carries the coveted Bedrock tools, which are frequently worth twice what other Stanley tools are.

The Best Things has numerous Stanley tools for sale.

Let the games begin, starting with the bread and butter of Stanley, upon which they built an empire, the Bailey patent bench plane in its various configurations. Leonard Bailey designed what has become the standard plane configuration that’s still in use to this day. He was the undisputed champion of the plane slugfest that errupted in the decades after the Civil War. If you’re at all fascinated with handplane design, follow this link to read all about the Better Moustraps.

A general description of stuff to look for when examining a bench plane is listed under the 3 smoother. This stuff is applicable to all Stanley bench planes of the basic Bailey design as well as those that incorporate the Bailey patents such as the Bed Rocks , and comes from my observances of thousands of these planes. All dimensions that follow each number indicate the length of the sole, the width of the cutter, and the weight of the tool.

There were some subtle differences in the dimensions, but only those that are significant are mentioned where appropriate. So, if you have a plane that’s one-half inch shorter or longer than what’s mentioned here, don’t go thinking that you have some ultra-rare version of the tool.

As the years have gone by while undertaking our massive home renovation, I’ve found myself purchasing more and more vintage hand tools to deal with certain projects. I started with a few hand planes to use for finish carpentry tasks, but then I’d find I could use a bevel gauge, small vise, or some other vintage tool to help move things along. I also started posting pictures of the tools I’d acquired along with some specifications about the date of manufacture.

It didn’t take long to realize I’d become a vintage tool collector, and I was spending a fair amount of time finding old bits of iron and steel that I wanted for the collection rather than because I needed them for a specific job.

in the ‘s, this handle and knob will fit the same type planes dating back to , Although walnut is not the original type wood used on Stanley planes it is The pictures reflects one of 12 handles made from the same material (same.

This is not an Australian type study and not your definitive oeuvre on everything Stanley. There are more detailed publications available. If you keep collecting Stanley tools you will inevitably find them. I know of many collectors who have built their collections over 20 or more years and never paid top dollar for a single plane. Stanley planes, even the rarest of the rare, might still pop up at flea markets, garage sales, swap meets, General auctions or on a dusty shelf in a neglected corner of an antique shop.

And of course, there is eBay! Still the number one source of bargain buying for dealers and collectors alike. The more time you invest, the better the result. Prepare to get stung every now and then but more often than not the risk is well worth taking. I bought some of the best and rarest tools on a hunch

While comprehensive type studies exist for the no. Using existing reference material from the previous type studies, I poured over old catalogs, advertisements, the planes themselves, and anything else I could get my hands on. Rather than try to create a formal type study, I decided to focus more on the practical goal of simply establishing criteria for dating the planes within the narrowest possible time frame.

While there are still some gaps and inconsistencies across models some of which appear within the published type studies of the nos.

Now you have to remember Stanley did not make or use a Flow Chart when they made planes, they used up all the old parts as they came up with new designs and plane made near the beginning of a new design style might have some of the older parts.. Several factors contributed to the collapse but much of it was due to post Civil War inflation and over speculation in rapidly expanding railroads. Despite the tough economic times, Stanley kept most of its workers employed and the inventive minds working at Stanley continued to innovate, develop new tools, and worked to meet the needs of their customers and the expanding country. I included only one of the drawings that accompanied that patent because it most clearly illustrated the adjustment mechanism I discussed in that post.

The original patent showed the cutter adjustment mechanism on a bench plane. Traut and Richards filed for a reissued patent and were granted that patent on March 20 th , This drawing is shown in Figure 1. Figure 1. Figure 2. Justus A. Traut and Henry Richards Patent No. These two patents came together to create the Stanley Model Shop bench plane shown in Figure 3.

A hand plane is a tool for shaping wood using muscle power to force the cutting blade over the wood surface. Some rotary power planers are motorized power tools used for the same types of larger tasks, but are unsuitable for fine scale planing where a miniature hand plane is used. Generally all planes are used to flatten, reduce the thickness of, and impart a smooth surface to a rough piece of lumber or timber.

Planing is also used to produce horizontal, vertical, or inclined flat surfaces on workpieces usually too large for shaping, where the integrity of the whole requires the same smooth surface. Special types of planes are designed to cut joints or decorative mouldings. Hand planes are generally the combination of a cutting edge, such as a sharpened metal plate, attached to a firm body, that when moved over a wood surface, take up relatively uniform shavings, by nature of the body riding on the ‘high spots’ in the wood, and also by providing a relatively constant angle to the cutting edge, render the planed surface very smooth.

A cutter which extends below the bottom surface, or sole , of the plane slices off shavings of wood. A large, flat sole on a plane guides the cutter to remove only the highest parts of an imperfect surface, until, after several passes, the surface is flat and smooth. When used for flattening, bench planes with longer soles are preferred for boards with longer longitudinal dimensions. A longer sole registers against a greater portion of the board’s face or edge surface which leads to a more consistently flat surface or straighter edge.

Conversely, using a smaller plane allows for more localized low or high spots to remain. Though most planes are pushed across a piece of wood, holding it with one or both hands, Japanese planes are pulled toward the body, not pushed away. Woodworking machinery that perform a similar function as hand planes include the jointer and the thickness planer , also called a thicknesser; the job these specialty power tools can still be done by hand planers and skilled manual labor as it was for many centuries.

When rough lumber is reduced to dimensional lumber , a large electric motor or internal combustion engine will drive a thickness planer that removes a certain percentage of excess wood to create a uniform, smooth surface on all four sides of the board and in specialty woods, may also plane the cut edges.
